chapter 7: millie

The next day I headed back to the cemetery after work, focused on figuring out more about Sister Jones and my diner guy.

Of course, being too focused is a thing. It is such a thing that you can hyper-focus on something and miss everything else around you. Like the open grave you accidentally tumble into head first.

“Well, looks like you’re taking a little rest. Not your final rest, I hope,” said an unfamiliar voice. The ghost hovered over the hole, and me, laughing. She wore a bright dress of pinks and oranges with her hair swept up in a kerchief exploding out the sides and back like a cloud of billowing gray smoke. Not someone I’d known in life, I curiously looked up at the specter.

“Nah, no rest for me. Just a quality control check here,” I said, brushing the loose dirt from my skirt and legs and pretending to measure the grave. “Seems alright. I’m sure its new owner will be very happy, uh, yeah.” That got awkward quick.

“So, you’re Alex?” the ghost asked. She didn’t say it like she questioned whether I was Alex or not. More like she she questioned why I was Alex and not someone else.

“Yep. That’s me. Alex Montoya. And you are?”

“Me? I’m Millie Henri, honey. I thought everyone knew that. You just call me Ms. Millie.”

Flustered, I made my way out of the grave. It took a few extra scrambling moves, but I got out. Of course, I smeared grass and loam across my face and body with all my wriggling. A walking disaster, I stood up and said my hellos.

“Ms. Millie, it seems I may be the only one who doesn’t know you. But, it’s my pleasure. I’m guessing my mother sent you.”

“She sure did. I just love that woman. She’s a real hoot,” Ms. Millie said with a sweet smile. She was older when she died. Probably around 90 or so, but I could tell her zest for life was not eclipsed by her death. She must have been a real hoot herself.

I could feel my smile grow. Millie’s laugh and exuberance were infectious. “Yes, ma’am. Mama is pretty great, but I’m surprised she got a hold of you so quickly.”

“Well, there ain’t as much to do when you die as you’d think. Not for me at least. I kind of float around, visit some folks, spy on some others, and play poker.”

“Poker, huh? Not big on dominoes?”

“Honey, I don’t play with those old coots. I’m a poker gal. I like a game of strategy.”

Old coots? She was a ghost who died in her 90s. Wasn’t she an old coot? I wasn’t about to ask her though. I had a feeling about the response I’d get.

“So, do you play poker with Mama?” I asked, finding it hard to envision my mother at a card table.

“Sometimes. She’s real busy though. Helping all of us get to where we need is a full time job for her. I try to help her when I can.
